It really is worth double checking your jewelry.

Types of Jewelry

One of the most exciting facets of body piercing is the insane selection of jewelry.

Believe it or not, this vast array of styles can be condensed down into two main groups. Rings and barbells. The two main types can each be split into subcategories. Let’s have a closer look!

Barbells

One of the prime types of body jewelry is the barbell. Jewelry which is made up of a post with a ball on each end.

Straight Barbell

It doesn’t take a genius to guess what a straight barbell is. It is exactly what you would assume it to be. A straight post with a ball or other closure shape on each end.

Worn in:

• Tongue piercing
• Nipple piercing
• Industrial piercing
• Some other piercings around the ears

Curved Barbell

Another common form of barbell. Not wildly different to the straight barbell. Other than the fact that the post is curved rather than straight.

Worn in:

• Eyebrow piercing
• Bridge piercing
• Vertical labret/vertical philtrum
• Smiley piercing
• Tongue frenulum

Surface Bar

Worn in the flat surfaces of your skin. The surface bar has a straight post with a short upright leg at each side. The uprights or legs are usually at a right angle from the main bar. Kind of like an open staple.

The assortment of ends available for the surface bar consists of gems, disks and balls. There is also a variation on the surface bar which has an upright leg on one end alone. This style of surface bar is specifically designed for the Christina piercing.

Worn in:

• Surface piercings on any part of the body

Jeweled Navel Curve

The type of jewelry you wear in a belly button or VCH piercing. Commonly known as a Navel Bar or Belly Bar.

The Jeweled Navel Curve has a larger fixed gem at the bottom. It is designed so that this gem faces forward when worn in a vertical piercing. The top is threaded so the top can be unscrewed or replaced.

Worn in:

• Belly button piercing
• VCH piercing
• Other vertical body piercings

J-Curve

Similar to the Jeweled Navel Curve. The J-Curve is shaped like the letter J. This means that the bottom end of the jewelry protrudes much further than the top. Both ends can be unscrewed, making this jewelry versatile.

This type of jewelry is perfect for those who have a deep set belly button.

Worn in:

• Belly button piercing

Rings

The second primary type of body jewelry. This encompasses any hoop shaped jewelry.

Captive Bead Ring (CBR)

There are numerous names for the Captive Bead Ring. You may have heard it referred to as a Ball Closure Ring (BCR), captive captive ring or Captive Bead Ring (CBR).

This type of ring is secured in place by tension. The ball or other closure piece is held in between the ends of the ring. There is a dimple on each side of the ball. These dimples help the ball stay in place.

The Captive Bead Ring is one of the best choices for a new piercing while it heals. The edges are all smooth so there is little to no chance of it getting caught on anything. Also the closure piece is easily replaceable without having to remove the jewelry.

Worn in:

• Labret, snakebites or any other low lip piercing.
• Septum piercing
• Ear piercings
• Eyebrow piercing
• Tragus Piercing
• Helix piercing and other cartilage piercings

Fixed Bead Ring

Another common ring variation. Appearance wise, the fixed bead ring looks the same as the Captive Bead Ring. The difference being that the ball is permanently attached to one end of the ring. One would open this type of jewelry by twisting it.

A quality bead ring should have a simple drilled into the open side of the bead. The end of the ring should sit in there very neatly.

The best way to tell the difference between a Captive Bead Ring and a quality Fixed Bead Ring is by attempting to spin the ball. If the ball spin, it is a Captive Bead Ring. If not, it is a Fixed Bead Ring.

Note: You will possibly need tools in order to open the Fixed Bead Ring. It is more awkward than the Captive Bead Ring.

Worn in:

• Same as Captive Bead Ring

Miscellaneous Jewelry

Barbells and rings cover most jewelry styles. Although there are a few other types of body jewelry which fall under neither of those categories.

Labret Studs

Another very common but slightly more specialised type of body jewelry. As the name suggests, this type off jewelry is designed to be worn in labret piercings. This includes the Monroe and even the cheek piercing.

A labret stud is made up of a post with a flat disk at one end and a removable ball at the other. The screw on ball is worn on the outside of the piercing. The flat disk shaped bottom sits flat against the inside of the lip.

Worn in:

• Labret piercings
• Monroe or Madonna piercing
• Philtrum/Medusa piercing
• Cheek piercings
• Dahlia bites
• Any orofacial piercing

Circular Barbell

The circular barbell is a hybrid between a barbell and a ring.

This type of jewelry functions as a barbell. It is removed and inserted by removing one or both of the ends. Although it is shaped and measured like a ring, by inside diameter across the widest part.

You may hear of the circular barbell refered to as a horseshoe ring or bull ring.

Worn in:

• Septum piercing
• Ear and cartilage piercings
• Lip piercings

Nose Screw

Post style jewelry with a corkscrew tail which rests on the inside of the nostril.

There are a few variations on this style of jewelry.

Worn in:

• Nostril piercings only.

Size of Your Jewelry

Buying a new piece of body jewelry? One variation you have to get right is the size!

So how do you measure the different types of jewelry? Read on to find out.

Gauge Size

In other words, ‘thickness’.

Your piercing’s size ill be equal to the needle you were pierced with. That is if you were pierced using professional equipment. If you were pierced using a gun you would be a 20g or 18g. Whatever you do, don’t get pierced with a gun!

Your jewelry should either be the same gauge size as your piercing or the next size down. So in a piercing done with a 15g needle you would wear 14g jewelry.

Jewelry Length or Inside Diameter

Knowing how thick your jewelry is makes a good start. That’s all well and good In order to get a truly good fit you will need to consider length or diameter.

Barbells – measured by the length of their post. This never includes the balls or other endings of the jewelry.

Rings – measured by their inner diameter. This means that you will measure the diameter across the widest part inside the ring.

Curved barbells – Which are a bit more complicated. The length of a curved barbell is measured by the length between the balls on each end. Not taking into account the angle or depth of the curve. This means that there is more variation in the measurement of curved barbells, but also less certainty.

Balls, beads and other endings – measured by the diameter at their widest point.

So, Are You Wearing the Right Jewelry?

Getting the shape and size of your jewelry is of utmost importance. Especially if your piercing is new.

Wearing incorrectly sized or shaped jewelry can hinder your body.s healing process. When you first get the piercing done you should where slightly longer jewelry to make room for swelling.

Fake Septum Piercing Jewelry

Plain Fake Septum Ring

First of all, I’m going to show you this fake septum ring which is in the style of a good ol’ standard nose ring. It is a slightly odd shape compared to a plain ring you would wear in an actual septum piercing but when it’s up your nose it really doesn’t notice all that much.

To the people around you, this will pretty much look like a genuine septum piercing, unless they are really scrutinizing your face (which I sincerely hope they’re not!). Also I feel I should warn you that this septum ring is a little bit smaller than it looks in the image.

These rings are comfortable to wear. They do not irritate your nose too much or anything. You could wear these all day or all night without any real issues. You may have to take it out to adjust it a few times, but that is to be expected really. If you really want your septum ring to stay put, there is only one way to do this: Get a septum piercing!

There is a thinner, more evenly shaped plain ring available on Amazon but it is just too flimsy. The fact is though, these fake septum rings will need readjusting quite often and will never be quite as comfortable or cool as the real thing. You will never have quite as much choice of jewelry, horseshoe barbells are out of the question until you go ahead and get that piercing!

As you are probably aware, the microdermal is a highly unusual piercing. Whereas most piercings go in through one part of the skin and out another, the microdermal is ‘anchored’ under the skin through one hole only.

I believe the main reason people are so confused as to how dermal jewelry is changed is because they were told by their piercer that the only way to remove the dermal anchor safely and without too much scarring is through surgery.

Although this is the case, I would  also like to remind you that there are two parts to the jewelry that is worn in the dermal piercing – the anchor and the top.  It is the anchor which resides underneath your skin permanently and requires surgical removal. The top of the jewelry on the other hand, you can change at home by yourself!

Note: The first time your microdermal jewelry is changed, you should have it done by your piercer. This will make changing it at home easier.

What Will You Need?

Dermal anchors are very tiny and can be quite fiddly to change using just your bare fingers. For this very reason, tools are available for you to buy which will make this task much easier.

Sometimes using your hands can be the most effective way of doing this but it is always helpful to have the right tools nearby. If you have a dermal piercing and plan on changing the top of your jewelry, I would recommend you get your hands on the following equipment:

• Sterile pliers: There are two main types of pliers you can get, either one will be fine. The two types are flat nose or needle nose.

  

  These will come in handy when your dermal top is screwed on real tight and you can’t get it undone with your bare hands.

• Anchor holder: Unscrewing the top can prove very tricky and uncomfortable if the anchor is wiggling about. Luckily you can get a tool specifically designed to hold your anchor still whilst you unscrew the top.
• Forceps: You will probably find that you don’t really need these but they may come in handy if you dermal top is 3mm or smaller and very hard to grip. I have always been able to change by tops without these personally, but everyone is different obviously!

• 

  Rubber gloves: If you plan on using your hands to remove your microdermal top, you will probably find it a lot easier if you wear rubber gloves. This will give your fingers more grip and make it much easier to unscrew your jewelry.

• Saline solution or other cleansing product: Always keep your piercings and jewelry clean!

What I would suggest you do is have a try at removing your jewelry without any tools (except maybe the rubber gloves). If you really don’t think you can do it, that is a sign that you may need to acquire some of the above mentioned tools. I would recommend you get the pliers and anchor holders.

How to Actually Change the Jewelry

Now let’s get into the actual process of changing your jewelry. This is most likely the reason you are here, I would imagine!

Note: Before you touch your piercing or jewelry, wash your hands thoroughly. You may also want to cleanse your piercing to remove any dead skin cells or crust which may be building up.

Unscrewing your current dermal top:

1. Use either your fingers or your pliers to get a firm grip on the top of your jewelry.
2. To unscrew it you should turn to the left. Remember: Lefty loosey, righty tighty!
3. If it will not budge, do not force it. Leave it for a while, put a damp cloth on it and come back to it in a while.
4. Try using your pliers or forceps if you can’t get it undone using your fingers. You will be able to feel when it is coming loose.
5. If the anchor base is moving about a you are trying to unscrew the top, use anchor holders to keep it still.
6. If you really can’t unscrew it yourself, ask a friend to try. I your friend cannot do it, go to your piercer!

Top tip: Try not to use a mirror if possible, as the fact that your reflection is in reverse can really make things very confusing!

Also, I would suggest that when you do get your jewelry top out, you should cleanse it thoroughly using a saline solution or other cleansing product. You could even boil it (only on metal jewelry such as steel, titanium, silver or gold). Make sure you store your jewelry away safely in a box or something so you do not lose it!

Screwing in Your New Dermal Top:

1. Use a mirror just to help you line up the top of the jewelry with the hole you will be screwing it into.
2. This time you will need to turn the jewelry to the right to tighten it (righty tighty, remember?). You may want to look away or close your eyes to get a feel for whether it is screwing in properly or not.
3. If you are screwing and suddenly cannot go any further, whatever you do, you should not force it. Instead you should unscrew it and start again, the thread probably just got misaligned.
4. If you really cannot get the jewelry to screw in, this could mean that the threads are a bit damaged or just do not align properly to start with due to the way they wee manufactured. In this situation you may want to get a friend to help. If you have a spare top you can put on in the mean time, do this.

Top Tip: Always keep a spare piece of jewelry of the correct gauge size in case you cannot get your new top to screw in at all.

Conclusion

Hopefully I did not overcomplicate these instructions too much. I just wanted to be sure that I went over some of the main problems you may come across whilst trying to change microdermal jewelry!

Long story short, if you can’t unscrew it with your fingers, use your pliers or forceps. If that does not work, get a friend to try. If your friend still fails to succeed at unscrewing your jewelry, go back to your piercer. The moral of the post being to never force it as you may irritate or damage your skin!

I would say that Body Candy’s strongest point is their large selection of jewelry.

Whatever it is you are looking for, Body Candy have got it. You will find jewelry in any material you could possibly need. They do jewelry for every single type of piercing, in all different shapes, sizes and colours.

So, whatever your flavour, I can pretty much guarantee you that Body Candy will stock something you like.

Is the jewelry good quality?

As for the quality of the jewelry sold on Body Candy, it largely depends on the material and type of jewelry you buy.

The metal jewelry, such as stainless steel and titanium, are of high quality and I have had absolutely no issues with them what so ever.

The titanium belly bars and Captive Bead Rings I ordered from this site have lasted me months now. The only problem I’ve had is I lost the ball on one of them (silly me!).

As I said though, the quality does depend on the material. Not all of the jewelry sold on Body Candy meets as high as quality standard as the titanium and steel.

In fact, I would strongly advise you to not even bother wasting your money on any of the cheap or acrylic jewelry!

If you do end up buying acrylic jewelry from this site, you will find out for your self that it is very low quality and breaks extremely easily.

This seems to particularly effect the curved barbells, such as belly bars and banana barbells.

So, if you do order jewelry from Body Candy, I will advise you to stick to their titanium range. Steel is second best though. Whatever you do, don’t order an acrylic belly bar!

Note: I have yet to try out the other materials such as BioFlex. I will update this article when I do.

If you are buying titanium then yes, go ahead and buy as much titanium jewelry as you desire! You won’t be let down as you do get what you pay for.

With the Steel jewelry, you do get what you pay for. The steel is really nothing special though. It’s all good when you first receive it but I find that it is quick to show it’s wear and tear. The metal gets discoloured and scratched easily. This is not good for the piercing itself either.

If it is acrylic jewelry you are buying, well… Just don’t. You’re better off not wasting your money on Body Candy’s acrylic jewelry.

Personally, I have had no reason to get involved customer service yet. Although this is a good thing on their part – I have had no problems with shipping, delivery or the items themselves so no need to complain.

From what I’ve discovered, Body Candy frequently get people’s orders wrong and customer service refuses to change it unless it is still in the little baggy it came in. This seems stupid – how can you tell if you are happy with your jewelry while it is still in it’s packaging?

I’ve even heard of cases where they’ve gotten the order completely wrong and won’t even entertain the idea of a refund or replacement. Even if the item was broken when it arrived!

As I said, these are the words of other people, not myself. I cannot vouch for the truth in what they said.

If  you decide to purchase something from Body Candy, just take my advice and do not buy anything made from acrylic. Every other material is fine though.

I would recommend titanium but I’ve heard that their BioFlex, gold and silver are good quality too.

A word of warning: Check your order is correct before you take it out of the little plastic baggy it comes in. Once you have removed it from the baggy, you are stuck with it, whether you like it or not!
